What is living soil? It’s quite like you might picture. The soil in which we grow some of our plants is alive with worms and mycelium, producing a more sustainable medium with natural pest protection. Living soil makes up about 25% of our garden. These rooms are on longer growing cycles and get fewer harvests per year – because of this and some other factors, we tend to charge a little more for these batches.

Burrowing worms in our living soil provide biologically active castings while preventing compaction to keep the roots fresh with oxygen. Other benefits are decreased watering frequency, limited erosion, and additional protection against more dangerous pests. This is a hand-watered, 100% organic growing practice (other than the indoor lighting rather than the sun). The soil intelligence gets more diverse with time as microbial life grows, and in turn, the ecosystem builds and maintains itself with a bit of guidance.

We believe that it is essential to allow this ecosystem to naturally function on its own, without tilling and damaging the naturally occurring and developing biome.
